Tips for Successful ERP Data Migration

Whether you’re setting up a new ERP solution or upgrading the in-house system, there’s always x number of techniques that you need to run to get the things done perfectly. There comes a lot of layers and complexities that you need to get through and several hours of hardwork to successfully complete the ERP.

In simple words, ERP data migration is the process of cleansing, reformatting, restructuring, copying, and moving data from the previous systems to the new ERP solution. The migration data might include databases, documents, custom-built IT infrastructure and the previous ERP solution. Migrating data from the previous ERP to new ERP solution is no problem for the vendor as they can handle this efficiently, but it might be difficult for you. Here are a few tips for you that will help for a smoother migration.

Calculate and examine your current data

Evaluate all the volume of data you have and what you want to discard or move to your new system. Ensure to check all the files, docs, reports, on-screen inquiries, current data and historical data and determine what needs to be migrated. Also, cross-check all the data and its quality, meaning that if you want to modify any data, you can do it before the migration.

Decide what data needs to be electronically migrated

Firstly, start with smaller data such as customer and vendor data, bills, products, sales document and history, current and historical financial records, etc. Apart from this, you can also take into account subsidiary data like an inventory management system that is capable of tracking crucial data such as serial numbers, or if you are a food distributor, you can also check the number of remaining and original quantities of food.

Simply put, you need to look at the quality and quantity of data. Poor quality data needs to go into the trash and small files can be transferred manually on the new system rather than electronically.

Clean your folders

Not clear off everything, but that doesn’t means to migrate everything either. Determine good data and bad data before you migrate data to the new ERP environment. If you try to push in large volumes of data, it might restrict your migration capacity. Thus, management needs to weigh down the usefulness of old data.

Assign a dedicated team to work on the project

As mentioned, data migration has never been easy and without proper planning and strategy, data migration can break an ERP implementation. For a successful migration, consider assigning a team to manage the data migration process that will ensure to check that there are no loopholes and migration runs smoothly.

There are several other layers to data migration that your organization needs to take into account. Besides, you can also seek assistance from your vendor to provide guidance on this crucial migration procedure, as it can help in minimizing risks that are involved the other way.
