Apr 25, 2015: The quake, which struck at 11:56 a.m. local time on Saturday, April 25, occurred at a depth of 9.3 miles — considered shallow — in the Kathmandu Valley, which has suffered major earthquakes in the past, most recently a magnitude 8.1 event in 1934. Dharahara, a tower dating back to 1832 that rose more than 200 feet and provided breathtaking views of Kathmandu and the surrounding Himalayas, collapsed in the earthquake on April 25. Parts of north and east India also affected.
