Deadly flooding occurs regularly and increasingly thanks to encroachment for private estates, wiping green covers, abusing agriculture / farm lands, raping rivers and water-ways – all in the name of mindless developmental ideas and supreme political models. Rescue operations are often slow and scattershot as always. Some residents are spurning government aid as too little and too late, a few days after floods devastated the areas. Rescue teams and officials pamper themselves using the charged media, which regularly cocktails such disaster materials + TRP spices to manufacture and sell its short stories and fictions.
Currently disasters are primarily manifesting as flash floods and landslides, triggered by intense monsoon rainfall displacing millions of poor farmers and working class. Thousands died, with many missing, and there are widespread displacement, mounting fears of disease spreading as criticism grows of the government response. Panic in Paradise – Kashmir is also confronting nature’s fury where, for historical reasons, trust between the populace and the so-called governments are so low that some relief deliveries will surely dissolve into open confrontation. From Afghanistan to Bangladesh, India to Nepal, flash flooding and torrential rains are killing thousands, as the climate crisis and human abuses amplifies the effects of the monsoon, bringing widespread devastation. Large economic disparities have only magnified the sufferings of most vulnerable and marginalized communities, with huge death tolls and displacements.
These native communities contributed 0% to greenhouse gas emissions, yet they are paying for crony capitalism and government inaction on climate with their lives and livelihoods. There can be no solution without a roadmap for climate justice with human rights. Increasing greed is to blame!
The typical “Raam Bharose” attitude is going to be the reason of all future devastation and nature’s fury. A question to ponder: Why will God help prevent extinction of such mutated and exponentially multiplying species? Instead of showoff prayers and exploring jugaad technologies to build and develop safe cocoons cum disaster-proof arks, masks, space colonies, shuttles / satellites, surveilling radars, AI drones, VIP bunkers and caves, we must passionately listen to heart beats of our lonely planet and learn to live with it, not outsmart it!
